East Portland

Each neighborhood in East Portland has its own distinct personality from the hip, urban vibe of Hawthorne and Belmont to the calm residential oasis of Laurelhurst and Mount Tabor. But these neighborhoods do have one thing in common: They are some of the hottest zip codes in Portland.

ALAMEDA
Alameda is situated on a plateau high above the city, offering breathtaking views of the Willamette River and the Portland skyline. Hailed by residents as a neighborhood with Old World charm and a lot of character, Alameda features a collection of homes that offer the best views and are among the most sough-after in the neighborhood.

With several shops, award winning restaurants, gourmet bakeries and small cafes along Northeast Fremont Street, it is a trendy neighborhood gathering spot. It is also home to the famous McMenamins Kennedy School, a schoolhouse-turned-neighborhood institution. The Kennedy School features a movie theater, restaurants, hotel rooms and a pub all housed in an original neighborhood school built in the early 20th century.

ALBERTA
The Alberta Arts District, is an up-and-coming hot spot among the “hipster” generation and it includes neighborhoods in and around Northeast Alberta Street. Here you can find numerous boutiques selling items ranging from handmade local designer clothing to funky, one-of-a-kind handbags. Interspersed between storefronts are various art galleries and restaurants, including Vita Café, Halibuts, Tin Shed, and La Sirenita.

Last Thursday-an art walk that runs all year long, is the biggest attraction in the Alberta Arts District. The event includes gallery openings and art showings, and attracts hundreds of visitors each month.

BELMONT – HAWTHORNE
Belmont and Hawthorne are two neighborhoods that sit side by side and share many of the same characteristics: pedestrian friendly streets lined with vintage clothing stores, eclectic cafes, coffee shops and  music stores.

As one of the most vibrant retail districts in the city they have eateries ranging from casual dinners and funky coffee shops to authentic ethnic foods. There are endless options for shopping and dining and almost  all the retailers are independently-owned.

HOLLYWOOD DISTRICT
Named after the landmark Hollywood Theater that hosts community events as well as nightly showings of classic films, the Hollywood District is located just minutes from the airport, the freeway and the MAX line. The area is also popular for its central location and affordable housing. It was incorporated shortly after the turn of the century and has been revived over the past decade, attracting a growing collection of independent businesses, pubs and restaurants.

IRVINGTON
Named after William Irving, who claimed land in the area in 1852, the Irvington neighborhood is home to some of the most beautiful, historic houses in the city of Portland.

Homeowners in the neighborhood hold annual open houses to invite visitors to tour their historic properties. The annual Irvington Tour of Homes is held every spring and homeowners host a second open house during the Christmas season.

Irvington offers the perfect blend of tranquil neighborhood setting with a convenient location, just minutes from some of the best restaurants and shops in the area. Wild Oats Market, Starbucks, McMenamins, and numerous bistros line North east Broadway Avenue, alongside independent bookstores, flower stores, and service businesses. Just a few blocks from the heart of Irvington is Lloyd Center shopping mall.

LADD'S ADDITION
Ladd’s addition is tucked into a quiet corner between the Hawthorne and Ross Island bridges and it is slowly being transformed from an industrial Cul-de-sac into a thriving residential and retail district.

The neighborhood is also known as Hosford-Abernathy and is comprised of small bungalows, cottages and four-square homes built between 1905 and 1920. Over the past decade, the area has experienced major construction that has resulted in several new condominiums and townhouses and many residents have devoted their attention to restoring their homes to their original grandeur

The residents also have access to several fresh food markets, including People’s Food Co-op, which offers a selection of organic produce and operates a year-round farmers market.

LAURELHURST
